SLINKACHU

Slinkachu is a London artist who in 2006 started a project called "Little People Project". It involves the remodelling and painting of miniature model train set characters, which he then places and leaves on the street. It is both a street art installation and a photography project.
In 2008, he started the "Inner City Snail Project", involving the decoration of snails that he finds around London. After decoration, the snails are then replaced, free to go about their business in the city.

I find his work amazing, it is such a clever idea that embraces many different styles including street art, photography, children's games and installation art. What I most like about it is its originality.

I love the idea of leaving his art on the streets, so everyone can see it but doesn't know who did it. I could feel like going to find some of these little guys.
Besides being original, his work is comical and
ironical.

"The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography, and the titles I give these scenes aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed." Slinkachu.

I think that at least once in their life everyone has felt like these little people, lost and overwhelmed in a big city.

If you want to check out his website, click here.

In 2008, he launched a book called "Little People in the City", I got it for 10 quids in the Urbis Centre shop. I love it!

Brushing up..

I've decided I want to use Illustrator and After Effects for my brief and so I needed to brush up on After Effects as I haven't used it for about a year.Doing this I made a quick simple, not so great, walking animation. The straightest legs you have ever seen!

PS: If you're wondering why it is 16 seconds long when it should only be about 5/6 seconds long...I forgot to cut it down when I was editting.

Fantastic Mr Fox - Film vs Book

Yesterday (26/10) I went to the cinema to watch Fantastic Mr Fox which was originally, as everyone should know, a children's story written by Roald Dahl. Now,being a fan of the books by Roald Dahl I had high expectations for the film but ended up leaving with mixed feelings for it.

Firstly, while I was watching the film I noticed alot of differences between the film and the book with regards to the storyline which at times was abit confusing because you'd think they'd follow the story of the book?Nowhere in the book does it mention Mr Fox having a Possum for a 'sidekick' when he's on his chicken robbing sprees.Nor does it say Mr Fox has 1 little fox cub with a cousin visiting,it says he has 4 little fox cubs.

I found it quite amusing that in the film they used words children would find too difficult to understand and also has the Rat prancing round with a knife...KNIFE?!Does this not give out the wrong example to children? In the book the Rat does not have a knife and run round like he owns the place fighting with Mr Fox.In the book the Rat runs from Mr Fox because he's scared of Mr Fox.Then, there is the death scene of Rat which I'm pretty sure some 5 year old watching this scene was sat there crying his eyes out.

Apart from this the film was all in all...good.The animation style was actually quite amazing as it was made through Stop Motion and looked very impressive. For example in alot of the film you'll notice little things like the wind moving the fur of the animals.

The voices, who included Bill Murray(Ghostbusters) and George Clooney(Oceans 12/13),were played remarkably well and added to the mood and feel of the film which was abit like Black Humour. The most comical features of the film were the farmers Boggis(Fat),Bunce(Short) and Bean(Tall and Skinny) who try to kill all the animals on the land after Mr Fox goes too far and his Possum 'sidekick' who goes into a trance everytime Mr Fox is speaking to him.

What this film does show, that the book doesn't, is a slight case of morale.Mr Fox basically deceives Mrs Fox and lies to her and goes behind his friends and families backs to do his robbing sprees.Mr Fox then makes a mess out of everything for everyone and has to fix it all himself. As the saying goes..."What goes around, comes around"...and the film emphasises this well.

I still have mixed feelings over the film unlike the book.I'd maybe have to watch it once or twice more to make up my mind about it.I would recommend going to watch it if you like Stop Motion and if you're a fan of Roald Dahl to give your comparison between the film and the book.

geek pr0n

by the way folks, i had to go into college today and do some admin stuff [no rest for the wicked - even over half term!] and what did i see when i poked my head round the door of C17? - only a room full of luvverly shiny new toys:

... as if you weren't excited enough at the prospect of returning to college after your week off!

in a league of your own [geddit?!]

i know that, in this day and age, competitiveness in the world of education is frowned on  and we're all meant to get a lollipop just for turning up.  but, in the spirit of 'politically correct non-competitive competitiveness', i've started doing a monthly bi-monthly 'whenever i can be arsed' league table for the second year PDPs -  just to let them see how they're all coming along with their PDP targets for the year.

like many of my half-arsed schemes, it has inadvertently proved hugely popular, so i thought i'd extend it to your first-years PDPs as well.  if we are to draw a footballing analogy, then the second years are the premier league and you lot are battling it out for the chance to join the big time, or be ignominiously relegated to the 'south manchester amateur has-been division B'.

so "play up! play up and play the game!" as someone [rudyard kipling?] once said.

in my managerial capacity, i shall of course be adopting a gruff scottish accent and shouting encouragement from the touchline, clad in a sheepskin coat and clutching a mug of bovril and a half-eaten pork pie.

[you get one point for a studio log entry, one point for a review and a half point for anything else, which disnae quite scale those exalted literary heights]

ASTRO-BOY.(2009) - REVIEW

I have just recently seen Astro-Boy. the CGI Animated movie that has just been released in the United States. it is based around a long-running series in Japan of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. The film begins in a city called Metrocity, a city that floats over a junk-filled infested earth which i hope i remember was because of pollution. that right there reminded me of WALL-E when the world itself was turned into a wasteland. The Movie follows by introducing the main character Toby Tenma (played by Freddie Highmore) who is the son of Dr. Tenma, a famous scientist (played by Nicolas Cage)

Despite its slow start in the film, i really felt that Toby and his father are not really bonding as a father and son would, after all with a busy dad like him I wouldn't be surprised if he got upset and turn disobedient which is what he did. As the story unfolds, a tragic death of Toby occurs during a science experiment gone wrong and so Dr Tenma decides to try and make a robot in the lickness of his lost son by a strand of hair found in his hat. Dr Tenma sees that he is not the son that he once was before he died and everytime he sees it, it reminds him that Toby is dead and never coming back and so he kicks him out which was pretty sad to be honest. Pretty Dark, don't you think?. So instead he escapes into the Land below which is the corrupted earth that was left behind and befriends kids who doesn't really know he's a robot so he hides his identity in order to fit in with the group.

Well not really seen the Anime series of Astro boy but i have always heard of it and its quite an iconic character in Japan but the Anime looks very different from this movie which i think was a good idea so that it will be able to appeal to the US and European audience, I'v been waiting to see this movie for weeks when i saw the trailer and I have to say ..i was very impressed with the results. the Movie actually reminded me of a lot of movies from Disney's Pinochio, Wall-E and A.I. which brought back memories of how good thoese movies was.
The actors who voiced the characters did a very good job and made the characters very interesting to watch. The action sequences in this movie, was totally a spectacular, exciting race of adrenaline when you see Astro-boy flying through the city and discovering his powers when fighting off spaceships. The Visuals was top-notch and it really brought the animation to life. the movie had a morale message to which i could totally relate to which was about not being able to fit in and finding yout path in life which really warmed my heart and was a touching icing on the cake when i watched it.

I totally recommend this movie if u want to kill and hour and a half because you will be totally entertained for sure.. keen on watching... watch it on this website

Why not?

I have just been sitting on the couch with my pen and paper trying to find inspiration for the You Brief
I ended up resolving to a self doodle. As you do.

Testing 1,2,3

Since Saturday is generally sport day, our TV is on either football or rugby for most of it.....but since i'm not really into either it's a good chance for me to bugger off to the other room and do something else. So this afternoon I thought i'd experiment on trying to replicate the sketchy animated look from that previously mentioned video that inspired me.

This is what I came up with.....i'd say, overall, that I was pleased with the look of the final test.

Quick sketches

I was waiting in the car in Asda carpark today, whilst my mum took her usual 2 hours to roam the aisles!! I found a pen and paper, and just started drawing people! They arent anything spectactular, but it killed some of the time!

When I got home, I remembered the little trick that Stiobhart had taught us, about colouring in our sketches! I have had a quick mess with them and thought I would throw the before and after up on here!

The girl in the blazer and blue jeans is my wishful thinking of me - I wish I had BIG curly hair!!!!

23 October 2009

After lecture in the fine arts of critical studies I headed down to the Granada TV studios just for a laugh with someone to see the recording (and be in the audience) of Outtake TV, presented by Rufus Hound (not Ann Robinson) but by the script who could tell the difference.
Sitting on the forth row I really enjoyed just looking at the stage, which was really wicked... the many different coloured lights that hung above and the different cameras that hung in the background. Not been one of those things before I constantly thinking what this would be like on a miniature scale maybe set for an animation, considering the position of lighting, cameras shots (being a live set there were 4 and everytime he looked in a different one it really scared me) and how they looked. After a while being force to laugh or I wouldn't be able to go home, I realized to keep the audience attention you need to engage with them and create a script that is bearable (and also the BBC needs better writers...sorry easy shot ).

Going a bit blog crazy

I want to be able to do this! this is amazing its a Pixar short I first saw in the cinema, it came on before wallE its also on the wallE dvd. Its been done amazingly well, such a simple idea everyone knows, but given such a comical effect =D

Abstract composition

Today's Contextual Studies lecture was a bit of an eye-opener, with specific regard to Kandinsky and the connections between Abstract art and music. It turns out that i've unknowingly been an Abstract artist for years.

The reason for this is in direct reference to my music. When I originally studied at college doing music technology I was selected along with a few others in the class to take part in a university project involving something called 'Graphic Notation', it was a method of writing music using whatever shapes came into your mind, and we basically had to make our own piece of music in this way.
I remember it making sense to me, and eventually my piece was chosen as the one to be performed. It was quite an experience, we all gathered in a seminar at the 'Royal Northern College of Music' and performed my piece in front of lecturers and a few visiting schools....and then I had to get up and talk about it in front of everyone.

But that was about 8 years ago and it must've made an impression on me, because even now when I sometimes have a tune or riff in my mind...i'll quickly jot it down on a piece of paper in a graphic notation (Abstract) form and then when I get home I can remember it from my doodle and start producing it into music.
I find it handy in the way that you don't have to waste time drawing a music stave and writing notes, you can just quickly draw shapes responding to the tones/instruments/etc.

Oh, if anyone has access to Sky Arts 1 & 2 (they may be on freeview, i'm not sure) then it may be of interest to some of you to know that Battleship Potempkin is often on constant rotation....it's worth a watch, only about 40 minutes if I remember correctly. Also on constant rotation on those channels are various early works by Jan Svankmajer and Alfred Hitchcock, Svankmajer is one of (if not the) biggest legends in stop-motion animation so you'll come across him eventually if you haven't already.....his versions of Faust and Alice (in wonderland) are amazing.

Some Stuffs I Done.

I did these in Illustrator then finished off in Photoshop, Which is how I always work. If anyones interested... My style is quite cartoon like, my old art teachers used to say it was 'whimsical and illustration like' I was obsessed with Illustration in college. Not quite sure if putting them up here is what this blogs for but ho hum...
Hope you like =D
This first one was originaly an idea that just came in my head for a gig poster I was doing.

This one was boredom, I guess they're all just ideas that have popped into my head and I couldn't wait to get them realised on the computer.

This is from some old college work...

For a Kleenex competition I never ended up entering...

TBS Video

Okay this is a Taking Back Sunday video, I love this video (an I'm ashamed to say the song too...) I think its an amazing way to do it rather than just a band stood in some warehouse and thats it. Id love to be able to do this. Watch it just to see the video even if you hate the song, lol. Id like to say some really meaningfull description of it but for some reason when I write on here my brain goes 'Noooo i think i'll go for a nice walk instead' The choice of not adding colour I think was an effective one. Its not terribly detailed or even that clever, but a good idea.
Check It Out....

In all seriousness...

ok, the ass hat was a good for a chuckle....but I hope that you'll take these following videos seriously. It's relating to this weeks theme of creating a narrative from the most subtle of things....so it may (or may not) put things into perspective.

These are two very popular creations in the Japanimation world, the first being Doggy Poo.
I kid you not....this is a stop-motion animation which tells the story of a piece of dog poo who has his own dreams of becoming of some use one day....even though he knows he's only a mere doggy poo, the animation itself is actually an adaptation....the story has been around since the 50s I think.

After years since I first heard about it, I still haven't actually seen the full film yet....I keep putting off getting it. One day!

(This trailer is extremely cheesey though I must warn....)

The other is Kogepan (literally translated as 'burnt bread'), this is a brilliant animation series about a piece of bread in a bakery that had the misfortune of being burnt....and so nobody will buy him. And he is very bitter about it.
I think the whole series is on YouTube if peeps wanna watch it, it's about 3mins per episode and takes about an hour to watch the whole series......anyway, this is the first episode.

Very clever Typography

I love typography!
One of the subjects I studied at A level was English Language because I love words, how they sound, how many there are, how we always create new words, how we use them, but most importantly How they look!!
There are mountains of Typography animations on Youtube, but the narrative behind this one is extremely clever as well as having great typography and imagery.
Have a looksi, I am sure it will make you smile on this not so summery October Tuesday!

I put this on when we were testing it but think it got missed a bit, and i think you all need to see it !!! So i'm putting it on again.

I love the style, it could be drawn on paper dead easy. I think the teeth running around is my favourite bit.

LOOK....

Just one more...

I promise I wont keep posting every animation I like (well maybe a few more), HOWEVER, just take a quick look at this. In particular 1.46 - the playing cards! This is awesome!!

Thought I better put some good stuff within the blog so, to those who haven't seen this advertisement for last years 2008 Olympics here's Jamie Hewlett's Monkey's Journey to the West (and why I found the Olympics so interesting in the beginning).

Also as I think... well I don't know what to think with this short film that Jamie Hewlett's Journey to the West made, but it makes me think of a less colourful version of "House of Flying Daggers" or something along those lines but saying that its got some kind of mystic to it.

Evolution of man

I like the idea of evolution. My mate Dan always used to call me the missing evolutionary link. I think because I have hairs on my chest and he doesn't. He claimed that I was an evolutionary step behind the rest of humankind, and that I prove that evolution is right, and scientists should study me.

I might do something about evolution in my animation.

Check this out from Blu...

Hand-drawn Animation

Yo folks!
I was just browsing Youtube looking for inspiration for the You Brief. I came across this little gem - which at first appears simple but develops into something that is actually very complex. All hand drawn aswell? I think this is Stop Frame animation - which, if the case, must have involved him drawing every single clip!?!? Time consuming but definitely worth the job! The transitions are pretty impressive to say the least!

Butt hat

....and also, may I present the greatest animation of all time.

An hysterically funny but not funny lookin' guy.

Last night I was working on my paragraphs for Contextual Studies and had the TV on as background noise, I changed the channel to something worth having on and I was glad to see that Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof was on....so naturally I put that on. I think I might do a review about this movie because after many years of being a film fan, this was the first film that I saw that made me appreciate the role of the Editor.

Here's the video to one of my favourite recent songs, you may find it inspiring.....the timing is great.

Just to show that your work doesn't have to be amazingly drawn, this is just a bit from Parappa the Rappa....a video game from the 90s. It was designed by one guy. This game is considered the first music beat matching game which defined the genre, things like ROCKBAND or GUITAR HERO all stem from this.

Thought i'd also post this, it's not related to art or design....but inspiration can come in many forms. Watch the first 2 minutes of this. They're meant to be immitating a 1000 hand goddess.

This is in response to Bobs music video. I liked it and it really reminded me of this one from Air. Think it's the combination of black and white with bold colours, as well as the cut out style and dream like quality. Check it out...

Rubiks Cube Stop Motion

Just saw this one too. It's dead simple but looks pretty good. I once solved a rubiks cube when i was a kid, but I have no idea how i did it.

Baaa Studs Extreme Shepherding

This was on that program too. It's another craking idea for a stop motion. I assume no sheep were harmed in the making of this film

Post it stop motion animation

There was a program on the other day called Rude Tube. It was a collection of weird and wonderful videos from Youtube.

This one was on there. It's pretty good. Must have taken him ages.

Jessica Rabbit

Trying to get ideas in writing or visual form is hard for me feeling like I am standing on a train track and ideas (trains) are coming at me form either sides and I can't get out of the way, so bare with me and my delusional world.

Alright... the brief when I first heard its about YOU (me) I was (and still) hysterical inside but I will focus. My trail of thought consist of my childhood the people I met, the things I did and what I stand for now and so forth; Things like being clumsy or bad things happening to me like being shut in a walk in freezer (not recommend) or my dear family, which maybe a plus because I know them better than myself and they are a part of me.
Also when considering this brief I thought of live action/ animated films like "Who framed Roger Rabbit", which I always thought was a great film when I was small, which might be a good thing to look into and pursue (maybe).

Mini Stories

I found this mini story on a blog and it just made me laugh!
I quite like this child like illustration is simple and very cute!

Natalie Dee's illustrations.

This kind of illustration reminds me of a -not very well known- illustrator called Jeff Thomas. If you like, go and check his website (click here).
I love his stories and drawings, some of the stories are a bit harsh but I find them really cute! He creates little scenes with two characters called Pon and Zi, who have sometimes existential problems.

Hope you all like these illustrations as I do :)

The phantom of the opera is here!

Firstly, this needs to be said - KARL IS A MANIAC WHO GAVE ME HIS COLD THEN STUCK HIS FINGERS UP AT ME!

Ahem.

(Times crashed whilst writing this blog - three times)

I'm refining the dirt ore nuggets known as 'ideas' into beautiful pieces of forgery known as DESIGNS for my YOU brief.....So far i'm thinking of a music video...or something about games i play....i'll probably hand draw that and paint it.

Yeah....I like to paint! =D Take a look at some of the stuff i've made...quickly, before Dave comes over...

I might post more if i can be bothered. Come visit me at www.jared-hai.deviantart.com !

Just as I was about to go to bed...

Foo Fighters have done it yet again.I absolutely love their music and there is not one song I dislike that they've made. Then again, Dave Grohl is the definition of a Musical God. He's done it all from Nirvana to Foo Fighters and his latest collaboration with the new supergroup 'Them Crooked Vultures' - with Josh Homme (QOTSA), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).Amazing!

Back to the point, I thought I'd post this song on here. It has that feel-good rhythm to it and I find it quite therapeutic when I listen to it, it mellows me out!

If you like this stuff, Enjoy :-)

PS: Sorry if I'm late in the morning Dave. I got carried away doing this very late. At least I've been doing something productive!

Lucky Charms...

I just read Red's post below and how he spoke of this 'Pocky' candy stick thing and it reminded me of 'Lucky Charms'.I'm sorry but they should start selling these again in normal convenience stores.I've only seen them in places like Selfridges where it costs about £10 or something (around that price anyway) for a box...REDICULOUS.Who would want to buy a box of cereal which would be gone in about 3/4 days for a poxy £10?

Petition to bring them back anyone?haha

I love them. When I was little I use to eat them all the time and if the parentals hadn't bought any I'd most probably have a hissy fit and have to settle for coco pops...LET DOWN.

Anyway it also gave me the idea of using 'lucky charms' somewhere in my animation if I did an Irish theme and I had to write it down somewhere. Fortunately, I was on here and if I didn't write it down now I'd forget about it with my terrible memory.

Lee Mack...

When I was in Bolton, my friends there were all ranting and raving about this comedian called Lee Mack. I never really acknowledged the stuff they were saying and basically couldn't be arsed watching it.

Anyway the other day I was just browsing through DVD's on amazon and came across this Lee Mack. So I thought, Why not?!It'd be rude not too and bought it. It only cost £3 so even if it was shite I wasn't missing out on much.

To my suprise, probably the best £3 I've spent in a long time. The guy had me in stitches. He's the definition of a 'Northerner' with his swagger and loud quirky (some people may say annoying) Lancashire accent.

Straight away he rips into a celebrity, Robbie Williams, commenting on Robbie's swagger and how it doesn't constitute entertainment and how he's 'Smug as Fuck'.

He interacts with the audience really well and gets them involved, basically by taking the piss out of them from commenting on someone's glasses to someone elses t-shirt. This t-shirt did say 'C for Crackwhore' so she basically asked for it anyway..."Touch me you crackwhore".

Also, getting himself in trouble with the ladies and saying how they either have a 'horse face' or a 'plate face'. Some of the audience were not impressed...especially the one's he actually called a 'horse face' and then admitted he was digging himself a hole.Hilarious.

Anyway I'm not going to give a running commentary like a grammarphone about the whole of the DVD. I would advise anyone to buy it. Like I said, probably the best £3 I've spent in a while!

Lightening the load

I made the decision to drop out of my Japanese class this evening, i'm doing well but unlike the previous year I can't find the time to get any proper study in. I had only just recieved a letter from the Manchester College days ago telling me that they would fund the course completely and give me an additional amount for travel costs, but whilst free education is awesome I can't escape the fact that if I continue as I am then my productivity will slip on both courses....not good.
And so, prioritise I did.

....I am rather gutted about it though.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, enough of Japanese studies, I shall annoy my facebookers and tweeters with more of my disappointment later. Onto the things that have been on my mind this week.
I have actually started a book for reviews and random thoughts (etc. etc.) but i'll post the moderately interesting things on here aswell.

There are two advertisements that have had me thinking recently, the first being 'ARIEL' fabric softener. I was just wondering if they used the font ARIEL in their branding, and if not....wouldn't it make sense?
I still haven't checked up on this yet.

The other advert is on a lot of the buses in town at the moment, 'Kenco Smooth', it states that their new product has 97% less packaging and the font is made up of shards of glass and old labels. But beside this is an image for the new sachet packaging, very fancy, until you see that on the front of the packet is an image of a Kenco jar! ....the very thing that the advert itself is trying to draw away from. Tsk tsk.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rewind to Tuesday evening. It was that time of the month again when I and my friend Jimmy go to a Life Drawing class, this month was particularly full with all the new students around. We both agreed that it was probably the best class we've had to date as we were giving different methods to experiment with (drawing poses with the left hand, using only circles, passing everyone's different pens around the room, etc). And as always we finish off with a 30 minute main pose. It's always interesting looking at other people's different styles in the room at the end, i'm looking forward to the next class. (me and Jimmy also agreed that we're due a female model next time!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

And lastly, the main thing that's been on my mind. A music video.
I sometimes play a set of Japanese music at a monthly Japan film night in Manchester, so i'm regularly on the look out for new songs and artists to play and I recently came across this song, 'Heavenly Star' by Genki Rockets, it's not strictly the kind of music I generally listen to but I read about the artist on Wikipedia and I was quite inspired by general the back story of the artist as this is something similar to what I had been trying to achieve with my own music a few years back.

I then watched the music video and I was completely inspired, the look of the video (obviously inspired by 'Take on Me' by A-Ha) along with the back story really made me smile. Ever since stumbling across this video I have been thinking that I would really like to work on music videos like this at some point.....especially relating to my own music.

Something that maybe of interest to you...

Evening all...

Just dropping by with some info that may be of interest to you?Maybe not,but I've found it to be quite helpful...

Our lessons with Stiobhart have shown us the basics in Photoshop but if you want to further your skills it's good to have a mess around and there are plenty of tutorials websites available which is what I've done in the past.

The one that I find most useful is Tutorialized.Tutorialized organise and group their tutorials e.g. Text Effects, Photo Touch, Photo Effects, Abstract, Digital Art etc so it's easy to navigate around the website. The only snag is they have some stupid bar that takes up half of the screen when you're on a tutorial so just copy and paste the link of the tutorial in a new tab/window.

They also provide tutorials for Final Cut, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash if you're interested.

DeviantArt is also the way to go if you really want to be creative in Photoshop. There are really funky cool, and even retro, fonts and brushes of all sorts to add a more creative spark to your work or whatever it is you'll be doing and I'd also check out all the quality work people have posted on it.

Finally, there are alot of tutorial websites out there so if you do struggle with the on screen stuff then I'd advise you to have a mess around as it helps you to become more familiar with the software. Therefore,it'll be easier to use when you use it on any of your future briefs :-)

If you don't have the software, Adobe provide a free trial for 30 days - Adobe. They also provide student discount on their software (up to 80%).

The Start

'You don't know what you've got till it's gone'
This is certainly true when it comes to me and scanners! Years ago, the P-P family purchased a scanner. Not so long after, we brought a new computer and therefore had the tedius job of installing all of our software! When it came to our Scanner, I was shocked in realising that the installation CD was missing?!?! Though possible to download it off the internet, this wasn't to be the case.
Today was the day that we purchased a new scanner! Now the world is my oyster...
Where it all began...
Below, is my first ever drawing/painting! I created this in Reception, aged 3. My mum, who was very much into her Art, and my teachers loved this picture. I did too. From a very young age, I always had a pen or pencil in my hand.

This next little gem, is one of my first ever 'multi-material' designs known to record! In Year 1 (Age 4), I created this Christmas scene using needle and thread, sequins and paper. I have this framed in my bedroom, because I still remember how proud I was when I showed it to my Mum and Dad.

I have posted these two images because I will always believe this was the start to my design career.

Simple but amazing

Ok here is a blog I absolutely adore, it also has other blog links at the top which are also really good, they're all done so simple but can be really funny because they're so random. I can't even remember how I came across it, but I'm glad I did =D
When you're bored I suggest you check it out. This sounds really rubbish compared to the way every one else has wrote stuff... Oh well, check it out =D

david shrigley vid

those of you who managed to stay awake during my introduction to the you brief a week or so ago, will already have seen this.  those of you who were zzz-ing in the corner [not mentioning any names!] might not have done. nor will the two newest members of our happy band of brothers and sisters - so here it is again, on the intarwebs.

as i said at the time, i think this animation could have been produced for the you brief.  if you listen to the narration by itself, [most of the time] it's almost a sensible, everyday personal account of someone's life,  but the imagery and animation style used turn it into 'something completely different'*.

breathing space

[shamelessy lifted from last year's PDP, where similar tinkerings were carried out:]

i've made a few tweaks to the blog template to make it a bit wider; it's now 800pixels wide [as opposed to 620 previously] and the writeable area is 600pixels wide [as opposed to 420 previously]. unfortunately the maximum uploaded image width will still be 400pixels, as that's hard-wired in, but if you're creating slideshows, you should be able to select the 600pixel size now, without it getting cut off at the edges.

also, after me having a good oul' rant yesterday about how useless the blogger posting form is was [because it would always insert uploaded images  at the top of a post, no matter where the cursor was at the time], i've just found out that they have fixed it in their shiny new updated editor.   if you want to enable the shiny new version, you'll have to click on dashboard at the top of the window, after logging into the blog and then select settings > basic:

... and make sure select post editor > updated editor is selected:

what will those boffins back at the lab think of next?!

PS - while i'm in the neighbourhood, could i ask all of you to delete your test postings, when you revisit to make 'proper' postings, so we can keep the place a bit tidy.

thanx.

Pocky Is Love

On my way Coming from college on my hectic first day, i went into a shop to buy a drink. Surprisingly my eye caught the famous Japanese ( Pocky ) bread coated candy stick's
In Europe the name has changed to (Mikado), God knows why they changed it? Anyway... going back to the main topic, when i was young i was no different than any other kid who loves sweets, but there was something about the way that (pocky) was being advertised that drove me crazy!!! The cartoons, and the simple idea make it very cool for kids.

Also there was a myth going around in high school saying " pocky is love ", that means if you give a pocky stick to a girl she will love you, it was convincing at the time but not any more hahah. I used to try to draw the cartoons that they used when i was young, and I still do :)

Train Journey

13.10.09 - Train journey back from Manchester to Liverpool! As I spend most of my time on trains, I have now named it 'my creative space' - it's mind boggling the amount of ideas that surface whilst staring out of a train window!

On my travels back from college, I picked up a Metro and flicked through it. I came across an Innocent Smoothie print ad which I loved (see above)! I love the style, the simplicity, the kid-like handwriting labelling each of the items, and the general fun, exciting and 'doodle-like' feeling! I could drink Innocent Smoothies all day - not just because of the brilliant and oh so refreshing taste but because of the amazing doodle designs on each of the cartons. I love the hand-drawn style they use, and frequently draw the pictures myself on paper after I have finished my drink - I am not ashamed of this either! (See Below).

For those of you who have never witnessed the great designs of Innocent Smoothies - I hope I have passed on my wisdom with these photographs, and as an added bonus I have provided you with a link to their website! To find out more, and watch video clips click on the website to experience the magic of Innocent Smoothies! Go on, click it: www.innocentdrinks.co.uk

P.s I did have all the images centered, and spaced how I like it - but I dont think the blog agreed so has changed the layout quite a bit after I published the post! Silly Blog!
